TRAIL INFORMATION

GRANT-IN-AID: For any trail grant-in-aid or grant application information, clubs are instructed to contact your local DNR representative directly. The DNR has asked MnUSA to not be involved in these processes to avoid confusion and misinformation. Please contact the DNR directly with any questions.

DNR and IASA GROOMING GUIDES: See below for trail grooming guides provided by the MN DNR and the IASA for helpful information on trail grooming.

TRAIL SIGNING GUIDEBOOK: The Trail Signing Guidebook was developed by the International Association of Snowmobile Administrators. We encourage clubs to utilize this guidebook when placing trail signs in their system.

TRAIL SIGN ORDERS

There are 2 types of trail signs that clubs can order:

1. Trail marking signs that clubs can aquire through the MN DNR. Please contact your local DNR representative for more information on when and how to place these orders.

2. Informational signs that clubs can aquire through MSEAF (Minnesota Snowmobile Education and Advancement Fund). Please reach out to MSEAF for more information on when and how to place these orders.

MnUSA RAFFLE CALENDAR - CLUB SALES

We kindly ask clubs to sell raffle calendars on behalf of MnUSA to help fund our Charitable Gambling Account. The funds in this account will allow Clubs to make requests to MnUSA for financial support for any projects pertaining to trail maintenance, grooming, and snowmobile education.

Calendars are available by request starting sometime in the summer and all sales proceeds, AND UNSOLD CALENDARS, must be returned to the office by December 31st each year, NO EXCEPTIONS.

ADDITIONAL GRANT OPTIONS

SAFETY CERTIFICATION CLASSES

MnUSA recommends all clubs to work with the DNR for public listing and obtaining educational materials for their safety certification courses. Visit the MN DNR for more information on how to become a Snowmobile Safety Instructor

MnUSA does offer promotional materials to handout to students. If you would like to receive materials, please submit a request to the MnUSA Office.

CHARITABLE NON PROFIT CLUB FILINGS

MnUSA recommends all clubs to file as a 501c3 charitable non-profit if you offer safety certification classes, do trail maintenance, trail grooming, or any combination of the three. There are 3, or possibly 4, steps to obtaining and maintaining this status:

1. File with the MN Secretary of State : Minnesota Secretary Of State – Business & Liens
Cost: $90 initial filing, free renewals required annually

2. File with the IRS : Charities and nonprofits | Internal Revenue Service
Cost: Depends on size of organization, renewals required annualy and fee depends on what IRS approved website you use to file

3. File for Tax Exempt Status with the MN Dept of Revenue : Form st16 Applications for Non Profit Exempt Status – Sales Tax
Once approved you will use: Form st3 Certificate of Exemption
Cost: Free, no renewal required

4. If your club receives more than $25,000 in annual contributions, you will also need to file with the MN Attorney General : Information For Charitable Organizations And Trusts
Cost: $25 initial, $25 annual renewal

Annual renewal filings are due each year:

MN Secretary of State : Due by December 31st each year.

IRS : Form 990 filings are due by the 15th day, of the 5th month after your fiscal year ends. 

MN Attorney General : Annual Reports are due by the 15th day, of the 7th month after your fiscal year ends. *if meet requirements

 

BENEFITS OF BEING A 501c3 CHARITABLE NON PROFIT

1. Tax breaks with national and local governments.

2. Discounts on a variety of products and services with TechSoup

3. Donations from the public and local companies can be a write off on their taxes.

4. You can receive and use charitable gambling funds, from others, or your own club/association.
